04.04.06
Location: Zentrale Randlage
THEME: Film/Dreams/Reality
While movies are our most popular medium of entertainment, that won't prevent them from being recognized in the future as the highest, most significant art form of the 20th century. Integrating sight & sound in a 24 frame per second, dreamlike state of receptivity, movies make their impression in time. But unlike other theatrical arts which occur in real time, movies occur in unreal time. And as you may have already guessed, 'unreal time' is something which is hitting everyones spot art wise and will become only more emotionally relevant as time goes on. recent discoveries in quantum physics make this inevitable... regardless of the uncertainty principle.

THEME: SURVEILLANCE
Media Decompression presents an evening of observation. An uncompromising look at the ways privacy, convenience, and surveillance determine our environment. TV CARNAGE!!
(2005)

CAN DIALECTICS BREAK BRICKS?
René Vienet (1973)
90 min - French with English subtitles
A dashing hero, a spirited heroine, and an inspiring crusade against evil transmogrified into an epic tale of the struggle of the proletariat against the evil bureaucratic bourgeoisie.
Can Dialectics Break Bricks is every bit as quirky and strange as it sounds. The randomness and slight surrealism of the B movie are exaggerated by the bizarre and totally inappropriate narrative about dialectical materialism and references to Castro. Elegantly adapted to the setting of a 1950's kung-fu film.

AUSLÄNDER RAUS! FOREIGNERS OUT! SCHLINGENSIEFS CONTAINER
Paul Poet (2002)
90 min - german with english subtitles
Austria 2000: Right after the FPÜ under Jörg Haider had become part of the government, the first time an extreme right wing party became state officials after WW2, infamous German shock director Christoph Schlingensief showed a very unique form of protest. Realising public xenophobia and the new hate politics in the most drastic ways possible, he installed a public concentration camp right in the middle of Viennas touristic heart, right beside the picturesque opera where hundreds of tourists and locals pass by daily. And it was no concentration camp you had ever feared to return from the old times, but one that cynically reflected our new multimedia culture. Satirising reality TV shows, "Big Brother" especially, a dozen asylum seekers were surveilled by a multitude of cameras, could be fed and watched by passer-bys and two were thrown out of the country through web-voting.
The way fascism looks in the 21st century: Bright. Sensational. Interactive. Funny - and frightening. Austria freaked out. Thousands of screaming people gathered. Attacks with knifes, beatings, acid occurred. Political intrigues. Headlines all over Europe. 800,000 worldwide joined via internet. An incredibly heated week, capturing the European right-wing drift in real time. Democracy the hard way.

ATOMIC CAFE
Pierce & Kevin Rafferty & Jayne Loader (1982)
92 min - english
Is it only possible to counter propaganda with propaganda? Three American film archivists, discovering a trove of American material from the Cold War era - US Army Information films, newsreels, advertisements, radio broadcasts, government shorts, songs, cartoons etc. - decided to make a compilation film from it. The result is stunning, horrifying, comic, unreal, revealing an entire nation, the most powerful and influential nation in the world, the centre of modern democracy, home to many of the brightest minds in the world, giving way to collective insanity. And all over one of America's most far-reaching inventions, the atomic bomb. Duck and cover everyone! A great look into the ultra-paranoid mindset of the Cold War.
AFTER HOURS FEATURE:

CANNIBAL WOMEN IN THE AVOCADO JUNGLE OF DEATH
J.F. Lawton (1989)
90 min - english
A U.S. Operative implores a feminist college professor to enter the wilds of the Avocado jungle and help reclaim it from the cannibalistic, radical, ancient feminist order of the Barracuda women. Why? Because the acquisition of avocados is imperative to national security! This total farce hits and demolishes all the high points of Apocalypse Now, as well as drawing on the drama of Heart of Darkness and the action-thrills of Indiana Jones. A low-budget comedy that packs a lot of laughs and even a message or two.

WIZARD PEOPLE, DEAR READER
THE iLLEGAL ART OF H.P
Brad Neely (2002)
142 min - english
Wizard People, Dear Reader is an unauthorized re-envisioning of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Neely has taken a film widely considered to be a faithful rendering of a book and made it inescapably literary, a story in the old-time sense. Broken into chapters, Neely's words create images that flesh out the ones on screen. Wizard People is bookish but not quite a book, movie-like but not quite a movie. Call it artistic appropriation, theft, or piracy; at any rate your intellectual property will be laughing its ass off - or double your money back!
I am a beautiful animal! I am a destroyer of worlds!
I am HARRY FUCKING POTTER!

CONSPIRATORS OF PLEASURE
Jan Svankmajer (1996)
75 min - body language/sound effects
Six outwardly average individuals have elaborate fetishes they indulge with surreptitious care. A mousy letter carrier makes dough balls she grotesquely ingests before bed. A shop clerk fixates on a TV news reader while he builds a machine to massage and masturbate him. One of his customers makes an elaborate chicken costume for a voodoo-like scene with a doll resembling his plump neighbor. She, in turn, has a doll that resembles him, which she whips and dominates in an abandoned church. The TV news reader has her own fantasy involving carp. Her husband, who is indifferent to her, steals materials to fashion elaborate artifacts that he rubs, scrapes and rolls across his body.
Told entirely using visuals, leaving nothing to the imagination except the story.

ACCELERATED UNDERDEVELOPMENT
The Urgent Cinema of Santiago Alvarez
Travis Wilkerson (1999)
64 min - english/spanish (english subs)
In the Idiom of Santiago Alvarez - He who hits first hits twice. A portrait of the great radical Cuban film maker Santiago Alvarez. Screened with two of Alvarez still vibrant masterpieces of agit-cinema: LBJ - a bitter satire in three parts, around the three assassinations of King and the two Kennedys; and 79 Springs of Ho Chi Minh - both a masterpiece of personal cinema and a cry of rage against American imperialism. Alvarez was am ardent supporter of the revolution and director of newsreel production; working with minimum budgets and often re-working footage, he made films that were almost experimental, often personal and poetic. Famously he said: `Give me two photographs, a moviola and some music and I'll make you a film.'

LAND WITHOUT BREAD
Luis Buel (1933)
30min - english
The region of Las Hurdes, not far from Salamanca, is largely cut off from the rest of the world. To reach Las Hurdes, it is necessary to travel through the town of La Alberca, which itself has some unusual sights and customs. The Hurdanos themselves live in several dozen villages in the nearby mountains, near a valley that contains the ruins of a convent. The lifestyle of the Hurdanos is so primitive that, until fairly recently, even bread was unknown to them.

SONIC OUTLAWS
Craig Baldwin (1995)
87min - english
Sonic Outlaws is an energized discourse on contemporary controversies concerning copyright infringement, "fair use," and culture-jamming. Stemming from an investigation into the infamous Negativland-U2 suit, this dense montage of interview, music, and stock footage spirals out into the similarly inspired activities of John Oswald, the Tape-beatles, the Emergency Broadcast Network, the Barbie Liberation Organization, the Situationists, and a multitude of others now working with "found" sound. Practices of phone-pranking, billboard alteration, media-hoaxing, and the digitalization of intellectual property, seen in light of the law in a period of rapid artistic and technological change, foreground emerging tensions between imagination, authorship, autonomy, and the marketplace.

The film, from there, chronicles the anti-social adventures these two boys have. These include sniffing glue, killing cats, having sex, riding dirtbikes, listening to black metal, and meeting a cavalcade of quirky, bizzare, and scary people. These include a man who pimps his mentally ill wife to our anti-heroes, three sisters who play with their cat and practice becoming strippers, a gay black Jewish midget and his boyfriend, a 12-year-old gay transvestite who is also a cat killer, Solomon's mother, two foul-mouthed six-year olds, and most importantly, a nymphlike skateboarder who walks around town wearing pink rabbit ears.
